Symbolic Object: TIM's Briefcase

Quote: “I realized that to light my way out I would have to burn every paper in the brief case.” (567)

 When TIM burns his briefcase, it signifies him breaking the cycle of not thinking for himself. He is destroying his memories of the past and conditions set by white society. TIM is setting himself free  and  choosing to live by his own standards and power.
