Synthesis: prologue - chapter 9

Throughout the journey that Invisible man had been through from chapter 1 when he got into college to chapter 9 after he got kicked out of college, the usage of symbolic objects demonstrate the development of the role and identity he holds as a black individual within a society that is dominated heavily by white power. Throughout his journey, we were able to see how the narrator's goal in life is to fit in and be accepted by the higher powers in his life such as Mr.Norton and Dr.Bledsoe. Symbolic objects are used to reveal his emotions, his goals, and objects that interfere him from accomplishing his goals. By using symbolic objects, we can see how his identity is changing as he is faced with challenges that prevents him move forwards to be the self- sufficient man that he is in prologue(after everything happened)

The Blindfold from chapter 1 is an example of Invisible man experiencing limitation when he was trying to fulfill his goal of impressing the white elites that he is trying to earn acceptance from. He went in with the goal of giving his speech, be impressed by the whites, and get the scholarship he dreamed of to be educated like the whites and to be in the same social class as them. The blindfold distorted his dream at the moment. Mr. Norton symbolizes power in chapter 3-5. Mr.Norton was who T.I.M was trying to gain acceptance from. Readers was able to see how T.I.M. was losing his true self-identity while trying to impress and dreaming to be like him. Dr. Bledsoe's letter from chapter 9 is another example of Invisible man experiencing limitation and being manipulated. Bledsoe had power over Invisible man because his goal is to fit in and be accepted by him. After T.I.M found out about the letter, his identity changed from trying to be like Bledsoe to trying to kill Bledsoe.

The purpose of using symbolic objects is for readers to understand how T.I.M desires power and admires those who has such power. These symbolic objects are important because these are things that happened in T.I.M's life before he transform into the T.I.M that we saw in the prologue.

Synthesis post 2

the overall meaning of the motif (symbolic objects) is still in the same course as the first couple of chapters, TIM is seen struggling with himself and through the objects he able to overcome himself and finally start seeing the truth. the symbolic objects are still implemented in getting readers an "ah ha moment" and realizing the path TIM is going through and walking esch step with him regardless that we know the outcome. When TIM finally realizes himself and starts acknowledging he is invisible and will stay an invisible and see the truth with fresh eyes the readers finally understand he has awoken and with all the hardships he's faced all the items in the briefcase for example being burned and forgotten to escape that white power that a hold of him are out of way and harm he is free and can see now.
